As is necessary with all properties, renovations and repairs are always needed. Over the years
many things have been done to Maui Eldorado to keep it in tip top condition and I’m happy to say
that at the moment most of the big (or inconvenient) jobs seem to have been completed.

Nearby at the Whaler, major work is still being performed as these October photos show. Work at the Whaler is scheduled to be completed by late June of 2009. If you contemplate staying there soon be aware of this ongoing project.

Meanwhile, at Royal Lahaina, sales of the proposed new condominiums are challenging. As of October, 10 of 60 units had deposits put down. Those units were at the lower end of the price range, which varies from $2,000 and more per square foot.

Directions on how to get to Studio J-220 from Maui's airports

Flying into Maui’s principal airport

Kahului Airport (IATA: OGG) is a regional airport in the State of Hawai’i, located 3 miles east of Kahului in Maui County on the island of Maui near Haleakala. Most flights into OGG originate from Honolulu International Airport; the Honolulu-Kahului corridor is one of the busiest air routes in the USA, ranking 13th in 2004 with 1,632,000 passengers. From the mainland, (effective 9/2008) Maui is served by these airlines:

Air Canada (Vancouver)

Air Transat (Calgary, Edmonton) [seasonal; begins December 23]

Alaska Airlines (Anchorage [seasonal; begins October 31], Seattle/Tacoma)

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles)

Delta Air Lines (Los Angeles, Salt Lake City)

Hawaiian Airlines (Hilo, Honolulu, Kona, Lihue [arrivals only], Portland (OR), Seattle/Tacoma)

Island Air (Hilo, Honolulu, Kona, Lihue, Molokai)

Northwest Airlines (Kona, Seattle/Tacoma)

Pacific Wings (Hana, Honolulu, Kalaupapa, Kamuela/Waimea, Kona, Molokai)

United Airlines (Chicago-O’Hare, Denver [seasonal], Kona, Los Angeles, San Francisco)

US Airways (Phoenix)

WestJet (Vancouver)

In case you were wondering, the Maui airport code of OGG honors aviation pioneer Bertram J. Hogg who worked for what is now Hawaiian Airlines flying aircraft ranging from 8-passenger Sikorsky S-38 amphibians to Douglas DC-3s and DC-9s into the late 1960s.

Maui’s Secondary airport

Kapalua Airport (IATA: JHM,), also called Kapalua West Maui Airport, is a regional airport of the State of Hawai’i. Located on the island of Maui off Honoapiilani Highway near the unincorporated town of Kapalua in Maui County, most flights to Kapalua Airport originate from commuter airports on the other Hawaiian islands by commercial commuter services like Island Air and go! express operated by Mokulele Airlines, unscheduled air taxis and general aviation. Airlines and destinations:

Island Air (Honolulu)

Mesa Airlines
** go! operated by Mesa Airlines
*** go!Express operated by Mokulele Airlines (Molokai, Lanai, Kahului, Kona)

Maui Rental Car Options

Touring Maui Island

Maui is almost like two islands. East Maui dominated by massive Haleakala Crater, the other by the rainbow-crowned West Maui Mountains. The duality is not only geographic. It is reflected in the spirit of the island.

The galleries of Lahaina hang the art some of the world’s foremost painters. There are music festivals, the Maui Film Festival, food and wine celebrations, and prestigious Maui Writer’s Conference. And Maui restaurants display highly complimented culinary sophistication. All this goes on while Maui pursues traditional ways with hula events, canoe races, down-home luau, rodeos, and gifts of Hawaiian song.

There’s more to do on Maui that could be squeezed into a lifetime of holidays. Sail to the island of Lanai for a picnic, or to Molokini for snorkeling. Bicycle down Haleakala, an extinct volcano. Challenge your game on championship golf courses. Sip a local vintage at a 100-year old jailhouse transformed into the tasting room of Hawaii’s only winery.

The readers of Conde Nast Traveler Magazine have voted Maui the best island in the world for years. Could it be Lahaina Town that retains the charm of a 19th century whaling port? Or the winding road to Hana with waterfalls and grand vistas that sail around every turn? Or the more than eighty beaches with sands of gold, black, ruby, green olivine, and purest white?

Maui calls itself the Magic Isle. Prepare to be enchanted.

One of the highlights of Kaanapali Resort is its world-class golf course. The Kaanapali Golf Resort is rich in history and tradition, and offers 36 holes of legendary golfing. Built on the playground of ancient Hawaiian royalty, the golf resort is situated on 1200 acres with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the West Maui Mountains.

Home of the Champions Tour Kaanapali Classic for 14 years, the Royal Kaanapali Course also hosted Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf, the Canada Cup and the LPGA Kemper Open, and the 2007 Senior Skins. Come rediscover why Kaanapali is, where the world comes to play!

Royal Kaanapali Course, Par 71, 6700 Yards

The Royal Kaanapali Course, a Robert Trent Jones Senior design, opened in 1962 and has tested the skills of golf professionals and amateurs alike. In the fall of 2006, this challenging course received a nip/tuck renovation by renowned golf course architect, Robin Nelson. Nelson helped to design all new bunkering and resurfaced the greens with TifEagle, a Bermuda hybrid. Combining wide fairways and undulating greens, the Royal Kaanapali Course is both distinctive and demanding.

Kaanapali Kai Course, Par 70, 6388 Yards

The Kaanapali Kai, originally a Par 3 executive course (Arthur Jack Snyder design) was also recently renovated. A Par 70, this course combines narrow fairways and a need for a deft touch around the greens. With four sets of tees, this course is perfect for all levels of play. Many of the holes are nestled into the West Maui Mountains and have beautiful panoramic views of the neighboring islands. For information on all of Maui’s golf courses, see VisitMaui.com.

Kaanapali Beach — golden sands as far as the eye can see. Blue ocean with the islands of Lanai and Molokai off in the distance. Pastel colored skies that linger long after sunset. Where the perfect Maui vacation begins. There are five world-class luxury hotels and six condominium and vacation-club resorts, each with its own unique style.

A paved beach walk connects from each hotel or condo to the best snorkeling spots, open-air restaurants, even a beachfront shopping complex and museum. Play 36 holes of championship golf. Get a beachside massage. Ride a historic train. Go body boarding, sailing or kayaking. Everything you want is here on West Maui’s sunniest and most exciting shoreline.

You will never be at a loss for something fun to do at Kaanapali. Of course, beach activities will be at the top of the list. Head out on a snorkel sail, sunset dinner sail, or whale-watching excursion. Go snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing, parasailing, or body boarding. Just visit one of the beach activities kiosks and they’ll set you up with whatever you want to do.

If golf is your passion, you’re in one of the best spots on Maui. Home to 36 holes of championship golf, Kaanapali offers golfers both spectacular views and a challenge.

Make sure you also look into the cultural events going on during your stay. Catch a hula show or musical performance; learn Hawaiian lauhala weaving, quilting and lei-making. To learn more about the area’s fascinating past, take the free Kaanapali Historical Trail & History and Legends Tour, or visit the free whaling museum at Whalers’ Village — home to wonderful restaurants and stores.

Many of the resorts also have programs including Hawaiian arts and crafts, outings, and activities. When it comes time to eat, shop, or be entertained, Kaanapali’s options are almost overwhelming. And when you’re ready to unwind, visit one of our luxurious world-class spas.
